BranchOut!'s First 2024 Community Workshop: How AI is Shaping Industries

On July 19th, 2024, BranchOut! hosted an insightful community workshop on how AI is shaping industries. Our guest speakers included Dr. Grace Lindsay from New York University, Dr. Philip Frana from James Madison University, Dr. Michael Klein from James Madison University, and Dr. Huaxia Wang from Rowan University, all of whom are distinguished professors and researchers in their field. They discussed the transformative impact of AI in their field, as well as unique ways AI is reshaping research, education, and industry practices.

During the workshop, the professors explained both the relevance and implications of AI  for their research. For Dr. Lindsay, integrating AI into her neuroscience research was a natural decision because AI and neural networks provide a great brain model, which is the key subject in her work. The discussion also touched on the risks of AI adoption. Dr. Klein touched on the common concern that AI will begin to replace jobs; he emphasized that as AI becomes more prevalent, critical thinking and effective communication will become some of the most valuable skills sought by employers.

The conversation also explored the limitations and challenges of applying AI to solve problems. Dr. Wang expressed that integrating AI can improve existing solutions, but should be done step-by-step, focusing on smaller components. Additionally, Dr. Frana covered the impact that AI is making on sustainability, especially regarding agriculture and transportation.

This community workshop provided an in-depth overview of AI’s transformative impact on the world. The BranchOut! Community Workshops team was delighted to host these esteemed guest speakers. Here is a testimonial from Kavya Kuttuva, BranchOut!’s Director of Operations and Co-Director of Community Workshops:

"This is my fourth summer with community workshops, and I’ve spent 3 of them as a co-director of the program. I originally joined because I thought it was a unique program and a fun way to spend the summer before I entered high school. Throughout my four years, I’ve built valuable collaboration and leadership skills, along with the ability to smoothly engage in discussions with industry professionals.  I’ve also improved my public speaking skills, and had to present in front of hundreds of attendees. I highly recommend Community Workshops to anyone who is interested in public speaking and community service!" Kavya Kuttuva, TJHSST, '25
