Most teenagers start making financial decisions long before landing their first full-time job. Whether deciding what to spend on, figuring out how to save, or wondering what investing even means, students constantly navigate money without always having the tools to feel confident.
BranchOut!’s Financial Literacy for Teens Symposium was created to change that. Bringing together attendees across six states, the event brought financial and career professionals together with high schoolers to build practical skills for today—and the future.
Behind the Scenes: Three Weeks of Prep
Planning began alongside the Community Workshops team’s preparation for BranchOut! STEM Day. For three weeks, student organizers met every weekday morning to manage STEM Day logistics while building session topics, securing guest speakers, and organizing the symposium.
The core challenge? Redefining what financial literacy means for a teen. The team wanted to go beyond basic saving tips—aiming instead to cover real money management, investing fundamentals, career readiness, and early high school opportunities.
Session 1: Smart Money 101 – Budgeting, Saving, and Spending
Panelists: Ms. Yanely Espinal & Dr. Chris Rey
Moderators: Caitlyn Kim (11th Grade, The Madeira School) & Lucas Lee (11th Grade, Woodson High School)

This opening panel laid the foundation for smart decision-making. The discussion highlighted how early budgeting and saving build long-term freedom for major life milestones.
Key Takeaway: Dr. Chris Rey shared an inspiring story of a close friend who began saving in her early teens and paid a full down payment on her first home by age 23. Meanwhile, Ms. Yanely Espinal challenged teens to resist the urge to spend money as soon as they receive it.
Session 2: Investing for Beginners – Growing Money Over Time
Panelists: Mr. Bharat Eruvuru, Mr. James Hicks, & Dr. John Longo
Moderators: Caitlyn Kim & Lucas Lee

To demystify an often intimidating topic, this panel broke down how to build wealth over the long run using real examples from their own youth.
Compound Interest: Mr. Bharat Eruvuru simplified how compound interest works for young investors.
Risk & Diversification: Mr. James Hicks explained how spreading out investments protects your money.
Modern Tools: Dr. John Longo highlighted fractional shares—allowing teens to invest small amounts in major companies—and stressed the power of long-term holding.
Session 3: Stand-Out Resumes & Essential Interview Skills
Speaker: Dr. Yuhsien Wu (Co-Founder of BranchOut!)
Moderators: Arbaaz Singh (12th Grade, Washington-Liberty High School) & Siddhant Srikumar (9th Grade, McLean High School)

Shifting from personal finance to career positioning, Dr. Wu drew on her extensive college counseling background to help students market their skills effectively for jobs, internships, and admissions.
Myth Busted: Dr. Wu challenged the classic rule that high school resumes must be strictly limited to one page—especially for students involved in research or extensive extracurriculars. She explained that a well-structured multi-page resume focused on depth and impact can showcase critical dimensions that short, vague bullet points often miss.
Student Perspectives: What It Took to Build the Event
Behind the scenes, student organizers faced steep learning curves in event planning, cold outreach, and real-time problem-solving:
Siddhant Srikumar (9th Grade, McLean High School):
"After countless emails and dealing with last-minute panelist cancellations, I learned that not everything goes as planned. Moving past those barriers made me a much stronger communicator and collaborator, and I’m proud to be part of the event."
Henry Jiang (10th Grade, TJHSST):
"Handling scheduling shifts on the day of the event was stressful, but it taught me to stay flexible and remain calm under pressure. Navigating those live adjustments honed my skills as a team player."
Caitlyn Kim (11th Grade, The Madeira School):
"I realized that organizing an event takes far more than just sending emails and reading from a script. As a co-host, I gained confidence communicating with professionals and adapting on the fly while keeping the session professional and engaging."
High Engagement & Key Takeaways
One of the event's biggest highlights was the audience participation. Students asked sharp, specific questions that allowed speakers to dive into real-world scenarios beyond their slides. Managing time across multiple panels was a challenge, but the depth of student engagement made every minute worth it. By the end of the afternoon, attendees walked away with actionable knowledge spanning budgeting, investing, resume building, and interview strategy.
For the BranchOut! team, the symposium proved that teen financial literacy isn't just about saving pennies—it’s about giving young people the tools, confidence, and professional skills to build their own futures.
