Raising the Bar: Inside the Rigorous BranchOut! Leadership Selection Process

Updated: 18 hours ago

At BranchOut!, we believe that exceptional leadership isn’t born overnight—it’s forged through challenge, collaboration, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.

Recently, we concluded our intensive leadership interview process for the upcoming season. To say the caliber of talent was impressive would be an understatement. This year’s invited candidates hailed from 15 schools across 6 states (CA, IA, MA, NY, VA, MD), including both public and private schools.

Here is a look behind the curtain at exactly what it took for these exceptional individuals to rise to the top.

Inside Our Selection Process: More Than Just an Interview

We design our evaluation to mirror a top-tier college admissions process or a real-world corporate job selection. We don't just look at a resume; we look at the whole person.

Our leadership review committee evaluated candidates holistically, actively discussing and defending each applicant. The core pillars of our selection included:

  • Total Observation: We observed absolutely everything. From professional attire to how candidates handled high-pressure moments—such as gracefully navigating a crowded room when multiple people were speaking at once—every detail mattered.

  • The Whole Picture: Beyond the live interview, the committee reviewed outside recommendations, past history with BranchOut!, overall performance, and even day-to-day email etiquette.

The students who made the cut didn't just pass a test; they proved they have the maturity, poise, and drive to lead.

Pushing Past the Comfort Zone

BranchOut! is intentionally designed to challenge our youth leaders. We don't want them to just fill a role; we want them to discover what they are truly capable of. This summer, our new officers will be diving into high-impact responsibilities, including:

  • Emcees for major, high-profile events.

  • Program Assistant Directors tasked with creating and planning major projects.

  • Social Media & Marketing Strategists driving our public voice.

  • Interviewers & Ambassadors representing BranchOut! regionally and nationally.

"Comfort is the enemy of growth. We want to know where our leaders want to grow, so we can help them thrive."

The Summer Sprint & The Road to October

At BranchOut!, we don't hand out final titles on day one. Leadership is earned through consistent action. The upcoming months represent a "Summer Sprint." An officer's performance, proactivity, and teamwork over the summer will ultimately determine their final path.

The culmination of this hard work will be celebrated in October during our Fall Celebration event, where we will officially announce final leadership titles. High performers who demonstrate relentless dedication will be promoted to advanced roles, such as Team Leaders and Assistant Directors, based entirely on their real-world impact.

Welcome Aboard!

To our new officer cohort: You survived a highly competitive process, and you should be incredibly proud. The data show you are in the top tier among your peers. Now, the real work begins.

Let’s step outside our comfort zones, push our boundaries, and make a massive difference together this summer!

Meet the Interview Committee

Behind every rigorous process is a dedicated team. A huge thank you to our four interviewers who spent hours preparing, reviewing, debating, and selecting this year's officer cohort:

"Listening to incoming leaders build on one another’s ideas and contribute their own perspectives—especially from an objective standpoint—made me realize, once again, the importance of collaboration and proactive leadership. One candidate’s insight, in particular, stuck with me: a leader’s role is not just to walk in front, but to ensure that everyone walks together."

Liz Liu, Rising Senior, The Bryn Mawr School

"Hearing the responses of all the incoming BranchOut! leaders during the group interview was genuinely a great experience. It was impressive to see how they built off one another and created such a welcoming environment for everyone, and I have no doubt that the future of BranchOut! is in good hands."

Alekhya Hota, Rising Senior, Madison High School

"Serving as an interviewer gave me the opportunity to engage with a remarkable group of candidates whose enthusiasm for service and leadership was evident in every discussion. I am grateful to have learned from their experiences, and I am excited to see the impact our new leadership team will make in the coming year and beyond."

Clara Luo, Rising Senior, The Bryn Mawr School

"Hearing the diverse experiences and perspectives each candidate hopes to bring to BranchOut! was incredibly rewarding, and it was especially exciting to see candidates connect over shared experiences in such a short amount of time. Their respect, enthusiasm, and collaborative spirit left me confident in the future of BranchOut!, and I’m excited to see the impact this next group of leaders will make!"

Elshaday Fasil, Rising Senior, The Bryn Mawr School
