Our program provides a platform for scientific exploration in disciplines like physics, chemistry, material science, new energy, and biotechnology. We promote interdisciplinary research to encourage the exchange of ideas.

The Program is open to

  • High School Students: Participants should be aged 16 to 18 during the summer and must be completing 11th grade. We also welcome 10th graders who demonstrate outstanding success in a professional lab environment.

  • College and Graduate: Individuals who are 19 years or older during the summer of their 12th grade, as well as those in college or graduate programs, are also to apply.

Research Project Overview

This four-week on-campus research provides students with hands-on experience at a leading university in Boston. Participants will collaborate with mentors throughout the research process, enhancing their knowledge and gaining insights into recent advancements in their field. It's perfect for those seeking to deepen their knowledge and contribute to innovative research projects.

Program Highlights

  • Mentorship: Receive one-on-one guidance from a dedicated researcher.

  • Location & Duration: A four-week program conducted on campus in Boston.

  • Start Date: The program can begin as early as July.

  • University Affiliation: Students will receive a university ID.

  • Project Outcome: Students will work directly with a researcher, culminating in a research presentation or report tailored to their capabilities, while gaining valuable firsthand lab experience.

  • Post-Program Support: Students will receive a recommendation letter from the lab that can be sent to up to 5 institutions.

  • Extension Opportunity: An extension of the research experience may be possible, contingent on student performance, lab capacity, and student need.

HOW TO APPLY

The application will be done via the application portal. The procedure consists of two main parts: Essays and Supporting Materials.​

Part 1: Essays

  • Applicants must answer the following two essay questions, each with a word count between 250 and 350 words.

  • Share a meaningful experience related to community involvement, extracurricular activities, or leadership that you take pride in, along with your specific role in it.

  • Share your research experience. If you currently lack research experience, feel free to post a research question that you would like to explore further and explain why. It does not need to relate to any of the research areas mentioned above.

Part 2: Supporting Materials

  • The following items must be submitted as part of your application:

  • Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required from teachers or professors.

  • One letter must be from a Science or Engineering instructor or a research advisor/supervisor who is familiar with your academic record and abilities. The second letter should come from an instructor who can attest to your performance during a regular school period. Please ask your referees to send the letter outlining your lab-related experience or strengths in scientific inquiry to research@velbranchout.org.

  • Official Transcript: Submit the official school transcript from your latest semester (High school or college).

  • Standardized Test Scores: Students aged 16 to 18 are required to submit all scores from nationwide standardized tests, including the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams. Taking one of these tests is highly recommended for applicants.

  • GRE Scores: Submitting the GRE is highly recommended for college or graduate students aged 19 or older.

  • Professional Resume: A current professional resume is required.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

  • Interviews: All applicants are required to complete an interview.

  • All accepted applicants are required to complete additional in-program reports and an after-program interview.
