Applicant Qualifications

1. Current high school students
2. Possess good communication and interpersonal skills
3. Able to work in a multicultural environment
4. Strong in Math, Science, English, Arts, Language, or Technology
5. Students with tutoring or relevant experience preferred
6. Strong team players who are willing to help disadvantaged students
7. Time commitment: able to volunteer on a regular basis throughout the school year

Applicants will submit:

- Application essay (please use a Word processor to edit your essays before submitting onto this application form): Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for Branch Out! (100-200 words)

- A copy of your resume (make sure to include leadership experience, extracurricular activities, and any notable awards or achievements. Refer here for ideas.

- Name and email of a reference (no letter is required). This can be a teacher, coach, mentor, or anyone who has a professional relationship with you (no parents or friends).

- For students who are interested in joining the management team, we need to receive One recommendation from your teacher, coach, mentor, or anyone who has a professional relationship with you (no parents or friends). Please ask your recommender to email their recommendation letter to branchouthoco@gmail.com.
- Non-refundable application fee (see below for details)

Application Fee

Your application fee will be used to cover your BranchOut! T-Shirt, program materials, and event-related fees. Early bird (before December 15): $35 Before March 1: $45 Answer all required questions on the form. The first 20 people to apply will receive a $15 reimbursement from their payment. If you are using PayPal, send your application fee to hccs.pta.branchout@gmail.com. If you are paying with check, follow the directions below:

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When can I expect to hear back? A: Upon submitting the application, students will immediately receive a confirmation email with a link to sign up for an interview slot. If you do not receive this email, it may be in your email's spam folder. If this is not the case and you still have not received the interview sign-up link, please reach out to our leadership team at branchouthoco @ gmail.com. Q: Does BranchOut! provide transportation? A: No, BranchOut! does not provide transportion—mentors must be able to find their own transportation. However, we will organize a carpool system to connect any interested parents. Q: What is the management team selection process like? A: We will review all management team applications, interviews, and recommendation letters and invite qualified candidates to present during our training in December. Following the presentations, we will make final decisions regarding leadership team placements. Q: Where is the mentoring site? A: We are currently mentoring at Edmondson-Westside High School, and we plan to add more locations in the future. Q: What will students do as mentors? A: As mentors, BranchOut! students working at Edmondson-Westside High School will tutor students in various STEM-related topics, including Algebra and SAT Math. They will also work with students at Edmondson-Westside to develop and maintain a vertical garden using practical scientific skills. Q: Do I have to be a part of Howard County to participate? A: No. Although this chapter of BranchOut! is based in Howard County, students from other locations can participate, as long as they can find transportation.

Once the application is submitted, students must sign up for an interview slot in the confirmation email. Applicants have to be in high school. "Like" our FB page for the latest interview updates.

If you are applying to the management team, you are responsible for submitting a letter of recommendation. Please ask your reference to email the recommendation letter to branchouthoco@gmail.com. Please note that this is NOT the person who referred you to the BranchOut! program. The reference is essentially a recommender who can speak well to your behavior inside or outside the classroom and your skill set. Your reference must be someone you have a professional relationship with, such as a teacher or mentor, and should NOT be a family member or friend.
