Describe your tutoring experience if you have any:

Last summer I tutored the students of the James Lee Community Center. The students were from various grades and levels (first grade-sixth grade), my group and I introduced them to some fundamental knowledge of biology, math, engineering, and physics. It was such a pleasure working with the kids at the community center; their curiosity, their immense imagination and their innovative ideas truly made the tutoring enjoyable. Although the topics of individual days are identical to all grade levels, we would demonstrate in different ways depends on the students. By categorizing the students into three different groups (1-2 grades, 3-4 grades, 5-6 grades), the lecture will be simplified for the young students in order for them to gain a better understanding. Despite the distinctions of teaching, all students have learned the same academic subjects. Furthermore, my group and I used experiments to help the students to further understand the topic.

What subjects can you confidently tutor?

Biology, Algebra I, Algebra II, Chinese, Music

When will you be able to participate and volunteer in the program?

6/24 - 6/28, 7/1 - 7/5

Cumulative Weighted GPA:

Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:

I am Zhicheng Zhao, a freshman of Mclean High-school. I participated in the Branch Out! last year as a student volunteer at James Lee Community Center. As a student who is interested in science and engineering, I would like to inspire more kids to pursuit science, which motivated me to participate in Branch Out! in the last summer. I also hope that I can help to improve the current status of our community within my abilities. In addition, as a new immigrant, I resonate with others’ struggle with learning. The same kind of academic obstacles make me feel that is necessary to assist others with their difficulties in school. Out of empathy and the responsibility as a part of community, I would like to participate in BranchOut to ameliorate the status of the community and others who are struggling with their grades.
