Describe your tutoring experience if you have any:

I have about 2 years of teaching/tutoring experience. I have taught a range of subjects that I have an academic background in and the language that I speak. I have been tutoring in a program name Chinese American Parent and Student Association since the beginning of 2017. I teach Chinese immigrants who are either unable to keep up with school work or are having trouble adjusting to an English speaking country. During my experience in the program, I worked with a few different students with varying learning styles. Even though they are around the same age, I couldn’t help them all out in the same way, I have to come up with different methods to teach the students so that they can absorb the information efficiently. I am currently tutoring a student that had just entered middle school who is needing help with her writing and grammar. We are currently going through a number of writing and grammar exercises to help her feel more comfortable with middle school level English assignments.

What subjects can you confidently tutor?

Biology, Algebra I, Algebra II, English/Language Arts, Chinese, Art, Technology

When will you be able to participate and volunteer in the program?

7/8 - 7/12, 7/15 - 7/19, 7/22 - 7/26

Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:

During the summer of 2018, I got the opportunity to travel to an elementary in the province of Gansu- a rural, poverty stricken area in China. I decided to participate in the program due to a desire to give back. I’ve been given a lot in my life, I live in a first world country, I have access to clean water and food and I have amazing learning opportunities. I realized that I have many things that people around the world wouldn’t even have dream of. I felt that it’s time for me to do something for others. Even though the 20 days while we stayed with the students is short, it was one of the most memorable experience I have ever had. This year, I wish to continue to help those who are less fortunate by being a mentor at Branch Out. I want to help those in need to the best of my ability. As a student in the MBHS Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering Magnet Program, I have strong interest and passion for the STEM and hope to inspire and develop other students’ interest in the field as well. I believe joining Branch Out would be beneficial to both the students and me, the mentor as well, it would also give me an opportunity to develop better communication skills and build better relationships with others through conversing and teaching students from different backgrounds.
