Describe your tutoring experience if you have any:

During my junior year of high school I have joined various honor societies--such as National Science Honors Society, National Honors Society, and Spanish Honors Society-- which has helped me expand my tutoring experience. Being a tutor is a job that I especially enjoy because of the rewarding feeling that comes as a result of being successful, in addition to knowing I have made a positive impact on another student. One specific example that encompasses my experience in tutoring is with a girl who was struggling in Biology 1 Honors. The week before her test, she asked me for help, so we sat down during a free period and reviewed notes together. We would either go through her homework or textbook in order to gain a full understanding of the concepts she was struggling with. After my first time tutoring her, she asked to be tutored several more times, thus exemplifying the success of our tutoring sessions, which is also demonstrated through her improving grades in Biology class. I understand from those experiences the qualities of an effective tutor and mentor: patience, understanding, and knowledge.

Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:

My name is Yusef Essawi, and I am currently a junior at James Madison High School. I am interested in becoming a mentor for many reasons, one of them being my overall interest in the mission of this program. Bridging the divide between achievement gaps and helping students explore STEM related subjects are objectives that I find extremely important, especially in today’s society where skills in STEM are so greatly valued. I’ve learned about the different situations that lead to achievement gaps and I understand the long term societal effects/causes of such an issue, so I already have the desire for change, and the desire to make an equal playing field in which those of merit can prosper. On a personal level, tutoring and mentoring are things that I’ve always enjoyed doing. I find being able to look back on experiences where I helped other succeed rewarding. I enjoy helping others learn, which is why I decided to be a tutor at my school. The idea that tutoring can be applied to a larger cause, one that can inspire children to explore new realms, is a pursuit that I would like to be a part of.
