Describe your tutoring experience if you have any:

In 8th grade, I joined a tutoring program for students in lower level math classes. Once a week during a study hall period, students in geometry would tutor students struggling in math eight. I would be in charge of about four students where we would work to complete a set of review problems. Here I found that most students were very formula dependent and emphasized "plugging and chugging". I tried to steer them away from imitating other problems by helping them fully understand the problem and then showing them how they can use logic and their critical thinking skills to avoid the use of formulas.
In ninth grade I joined the math honors society where I tutored a variety of students in varying levels of math. This time around, tutoring was easier as I had taken the maths they were currently taking which allowed me to give a more thorough lesson. As for this year, I joined the Japanese honors society as the treasurer and as a tutor. Tutoring for this subject was different since it required a lot of memorization rather than applying concepts. I had to create easy-to-grasp memorization techniques to help students retain the language.

What subjects can you confidently tutor?

Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, English/Language Arts, Music, Technology

When will you be able to participate and volunteer in the program?

6/24 - 6/28, 7/1 - 7/5

Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:

I am Tejas Jyothi, a sophomore, from South County High School. Some of my hobbies include rowing, learning Japanese, and competing in Model UN. I became interested in Branch Out because of my love for math. From a young age I’ve always had a natural affinity towards this subject and I enjoy using my problem-solving skills to tackle complex challenges- especially in Math Counts competitions. I’ve always enjoyed collaborating with other students and helping my peers when they don’t understand a specific concept by breaking down the process step by step. Along with math, I have found that I also have a strong foundation in subjects like computer science and statistics. With these subjects in particular, I have joined mentoring clubs in 8th, 9th, and 10th grade to help provide tutoring for struggling students. I want to expand on my mentoring and tutoring skills as it’s something I enjoy doing. I hope to join Branch Out so that I can gain more experience and get the opportunity to increase my collaboration and communication skills.
