Describe your tutoring experience if you have any:

I am a part of a club at school called LIFE, where we go to Weyanoke, an elementary school next to TJ, every week and conduct science experiments with first-grade students. I first explain the scientific concepts behind the experiments to a class of around 30 kids then conduct experiments with a small group of 7-8 students. I was also a mentor for BranchOut! last year, where I worked with around 90 elementary school students. Starting from the beginning of the 2018 school year, I have been a personal tutor for an elementary school student, who I teach English and Writing skills to, and a middle school student, who I teach Algebra and competition math to.

What subjects can you confidently tutor?

Biology, Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, English/Language Arts, Chinese, Technology

When will you be able to participate and volunteer in the program?

7/15 - 7/19, 7/22 - 7/26

Cumulative Weighted GPA:

4.405 (will be much higher after this school year since I am taking 5 AP-weighted courses)

Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:

The two weeks that I spent volunteering for BranchOut! last summer were some of the most educational, inspiring, and joyful times I have experienced. Through this program, I was made aware of the different perspectives on learning young children from diverse backgrounds had. Some students were captivated by our lessons and I strived to encourage their curiosity for learning; others were impassive and resistant which motivated me to instill a more positive outlook in them. The overall experience was extremely enjoyable as I connected with numerous children and was able to gain insight into their special lives. The hugs I was bombarded with every day were also a highlight.
Now, a little more about me. I’m a junior at TJHSST. I’m drawn to anything with problem-solving, specifically problems in the field of Computer Science. I have been a US national team member for Rhythmic Gymnastics for the past three years and I enjoy traveling to different countries and immersing myself in various cultures. I love volunteering in general and often work pet adoption events, tutor, and go to soup kitchens.
I want to return to this program in order to make a bigger difference with even more kids this year.
