Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:

My name is Jessica Wang. I am an eighth grade student at Brambleton Middle School in Ashburn, Virginia who will be attending Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology starting August, 2019. An avid reader, some of my hobbies include playing piano and guitar, writing short stories, coding, solving a Rubik's Cube, experimenting with watercolor, playing table tennis and basketball with my family, and implementing various wacky setups and designs.

I applied to become a mentor for Branch Out! because not only am I passionate about STEM, but I am also interested in helping other students with topics that, perhaps, their personal circumstances may hinder them from learning. For several months, I read to young children at Ashburn Library every week. Throughout my elementary and middle school career, I have also assisted many of my classmates - and other students from lower grades - with understanding the concepts taught in school; in fifth grade, for example, I explained math and grammar to a new student from Egypt. The experience was rewarding for both of us, as I remembered the information better from teaching them to the classmate, and I found it immensely satisfying to make such a difference in someone else's learning experience.
