Describe your tutoring experience if you have any:

Over the past few years, I have had tutoring experience of multiple subjects with children in a wide range of ages. I spent the 2015 summer leading weekly video calls with a teenage girl (age 13) in China. I taught her English, specifically through expanding her vocabulary and engaging her in English conversation. In the 2017 summer, I spent a substantial part of my time also teaching English to a large of poor Taiwanese children (ages k-8) with my church. I planned lessons that included enrichment and educational activities using basic English words and phrases. Last summer, I participated in Branch Out, where I was a teacher's assistant at the MCPS Summer School site. There, I mentored high schoolers struggling in precalculus and algebra 1 topics, along with grading tests.

Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:

Hello! I am Esther Tang and I am a sophomore enrolled in the magnet STEM program at Montgomery Blair High School. I have always been very interested in helping others in their learning experiences and sharing my knowledge about different subjects. My main reason for becoming a mentor for Branchout is that I am very aware that I grew up entitled to free and high-quality education. However, I am also aware that not everyone gets to have these privileges. Since education is such an essential part of a person’s development, I have a strong desire to utilize my talents to benefit those groups who are less fortunate than me. I am also inspired to continue being a mentor in this program because I am a previous participant of Branchout, and last year, I saw that I was making an impact on the learning of those who I mentored. I am very excited to continue doing so.
