Describe your tutoring experience if you have any:

I have been volunteering at the Tysons Corner campus of Hope Chinese School as a teaching assistant for two years. The grade levels of students I tutored vary from third graders to sixth graders. I have assisted two teachers and gained a great deal of tutoring experience during this period. In the beginning, I was tasked with making copies of learning materials, grading students’ homework and helping to keep the classroom in order. Building on my first year experience, I proactively asked my second teacher to expand my responsibilities. After A few trial weeks, I am now leading the read-aloud, teaching the new vocabulary and grading the students’ exams. I find it really rewarding to help younger kids to learn and improve Chinese. I was awarded the “Outstanding volunteer certificate of Excellence” for my services as a Teaching Assistant on June 10th, 2018.

Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:

My name is Emily Chen and I am 15 years old. I am currently a sophomore at McLean High School. I was born in Richmond, VA and raised in Shanghai, China. I moved back to the United States two years ago. In addition to normal high school activities, I enjoy drawing, listening to music and playing piano. There are a few reasons why I am interested in becoming a mentor. First, I have relevant teaching skills from my TA experience at Hope Chinese School which I can take to this BranchOut! Program. Second, I think this is a great opportunity to reach out and have a better understanding of a different and maybe less advantaged group of children. I am looking forward to the opportunity where I can have a positive impact on others through my work. Third, I am hoping to further improve my leadership and communication skills and be able to take them back to my duties as the co-founder of the Asian American Association at McLean High School.
