Describe your tutoring experience if you have any:

In elementary school, I became a Cougar Buddy by teaching younger students school materials and playing games, as well as being there for them as a friend.

Throughout middle school, I have volunteered at a multitude of after school programs all geared towards helping younger students improve in a certain school subject. For example, I was a Math Ambassador and tutored seventh graders in Math. In addition, I have tutored many kids in my neighborhood, my sister included, in a variety of subjects such as Math, English, and Reading.

I am currently involved in Speak Up, which is an initiative that goes to schools and encourages younger students to become better speakers and develop confidence in speaking skills. My experience as a tutor has allowed me to help out students and build many friendships.

What subjects can you confidently tutor?

Biology, Algebra I, Algebra II, English/Language Arts, Chinese, Music, Technology

When will you be able to participate and volunteer in the program?

7/22 - 7/26

Cumulative Weighted GPA:

4.50

Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:

My name is Cathy Zhang and I am a rising sophomore at McLean High School. I am actively involved in Model UN, marching band, Girls Who Code club and Speak Up Initiative. In my spare time I enjoy playing volleyball and reading. To me, Branch Out! is not just a way to get to know students and help them improve in certain school subjects, but a way to give back to society and develop characters and other qualities that will be able to someday benefit not just the little community that I live in right now, but hopefully the society as well.
I am interested in becoming a mentor because I want to help younger students to become more confident in subject matters and develop a passion for learning. Hopefully by being a mentor, I can make an impact on young people's lives and maybe one day they will be able to become mentors themselves to benefit others.
