Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in becoming a mentor for BranchOut!:
My name is Anna Li and I am currently an 8th grader, soon to be a rising 9th grader at Poolesville High School in the SMCS Program. I enjoy helping others because I feel that I am very privileged and that others may not be as privileged. I believe that everyone deserves an equal opportunity, regardless of race, economic status, or any other factor. Last year in 7th grade, we were assigned to complete a 5-8 page paper about any chosen topic. After learning about and focusing on “The Gap That Still Remains,” referring to the Achievement Gap, I realized still how prominent it is in our world today. Students aren’t given the same opportunities or resources because of where they live or what their socioeconomic status is. I realized the unfairness that these children have to deal with every day, perhaps not even realizing it. I realized that I wanted to make a difference in my community and try to bridge this gap - to change something to make the world even slightly fairer. When I heard about this program, I knew that I wanted - needed to do this in order to fulfill my dreams of changing our education system.
